Tankard, Qianlong c.1765, with the arms of Chapman impaling Debenham
A 4⅝ inch tankard (3¾ inch diameter) c.1765, from a hitherto unrecorded service with the arms of Chapman impaling Debenham or Debnam of Suffolk.
Three other Chapman services are illustrated in Chinese Armorial Porcelain, all descendants of Sir John Chapman, Lord Mayor of London 1688 who may have been related. These arms are ’differenced’ by a ’canton ermine’ in the upper left of the shield and were granted in 1634 to (another) Sir John Chapman of Westhampnett in Sussex, who was High Sheriff of the county in that year.

Condition : Body breaks consolidated, now barely visible by eye. Very bright and original gilding and enamels.
