Teabowl & saucer, Qianlong c.1790-95, with the quarterly arms of Huyshe impaling Stuart
Teabowl and saucer c.1790-95, with interesting heraldry, painted in the neo-classical style. The arms are of Huyshe quartering Avenell and impaling (for a marriage) Stuart quartering an ancient coat of augmentation, also of Stuart. Only five families bear an elephant’s head as a crest on their armorial porcelain.
From a tea service made for Mark Huish and Margaret Stuart who married in Birmingham in 1774; perhaps a gift for a twentieth wedding anniversary, appropriately called a ‘china anniversary’.
His great-uncle by marriage was Calverley Bewicke, for whom a remarkable and unique bowl was made about 1740 with the arms of Bewicke and manuscript inscription beneath reading ‘Our Coat of Arms’.

Cup perfect.
Saucer with rim hairline sealed and totally invisible. Enamels and gilding extremely good.
