Soup plate, c.1725, with the arms of Mertins impaling Peck.

Made for John Henry Mertins who married in 1717 Bridget, eldest daughter of William Peck of Little Samford Hall in Essex. They later lived at Valence House, Dagenham, Essex.

John Henry was the son of Sir George Mertins, a partner of a bank At the Sign of the Peacock in Cornhill in the City of London, and Lord Mayor of London in the same year of 1725. See last image for a portrait miniature of Sir George Mertins.
