Cream jug, Yongzheng c.1728, with the arms of Yorke impaling Cocks
A finely decorated cream jug from a tea and dinner service made for Sir Philip Yorke (1690-1764), a prominent lawyer and politician who became successively Solicitor General, Lord Chief Justice and in 1737 Lord Chancellor. He had married in 1719 Margaret Cocks,the niece of Lord Chancellor Somers (for whom an earlier armorial service had been made). In 1754 Philip Yorke, described as perhaps the most notable Whig lawyer and politician of the 18th century, remaining in office for almost twenty years, was created Earl of Hardwicke.
