Coffee can & saucer, Jiaqing c.1810, with the crest of Erskine
From a very rare armorial service painted on a black ground with brightly coloured leaves and flowers in a ’tobacco leaf’ style, which is very unusual on an armorial service.
The crest of a ’demi lion rampant holding in the dexter paw a thistle and in the sinister a fleur-de-lis’ is borne by the Scottish families of Maitland and Erskine – but this is confirmed to be Erskine by the existence of a Chinese black lacquer gaming set with mother-of-pearl counters with this crest and the full arms of Erskine of Dun in Co. Forfar, Scotland.
From the Roy Davids Collection.
