Soup plate, Yongzheng / Qianlong c.1736, with the arms of Ouchterlony impaling Hart
Very well painted soup plate with the arms of Ouchterlony impaling Hart within a cartouche of fine baroque design surmounted by a mask within leafy scrolls above the shield. The crest of Ouchterlony on the rim within five panels of flowers in underglaze blue.
The service was made for Alexander Ouchterlony (1683-1758), son of Robert Ouchterlony and Marjorie Arbuthnott of Montrose in Scotland. Alexander was a merchant of Angel Court (known in the early 18th century as ’the habitation of merchants and people of repute’), by the Bank and off Throgmorton Street in the City, and also a director of the Africa Company from 1738 to 1758. In 1736 he married Margaret Hart (1692-1753) at St Anne’s in Soho.
