Coffee cup, c.1790, with the arms of Rushout impaling Bowles, with the badge of a baronet (the Red Hand of Ulster) in a small escutcheon at the top of the shield. From a hitherto unrecorded coffee service made for Sir John Rushout, 5th Baronet, who married in 1766 Rebecca, daughter of the wealthy and influential Humphrey Bowles of Wanstead in Essex.
Sir John Rushout 5th Baronet, and his father, Sir John 4th Baronet, originally of Flemish stock, were both members of parliament, between them representing the constituency of Evesham in Worcestershire continuously from 1722 to 1796. John Rushout succeeded his father as 5th Baronet in 1775.
For the 1790 election he is known to have ordered an electioneering bowl inscribed ’Rushout for Ever’ and also applied to the king for a peerage in the same year. He was finally rewarded with the barony of Northwick in 1796 but died in 1800.
