Cream jug, Qianlong c.1760, for the Dutch market with arms of Udemans


A cream jug, 4", with the arms of Udemans, with the initials W.U. on either side of a gold star on the blue band at the top of the shield, with two dolphins swimming in the sea below.

Made for Willem Udemans (1723-1797) who served the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a master junior carpenter and later as the naval architect of the VOC shipyard. His son, Willem junior (1750-96) became a ship’s captain, visiting Canton three times and ordering a later armorial service.

Reference : Kroes, Jochem; Chinese Armorial Porcelain for the Dutch Market, p.413, where it states that only a saucer dish, a teapot and teapot stand are known.
