Teabowl, Qianlong c.1790, with the arms of Gordon of Lochinvar

Teabowl, c.1790, with the arms of Gordon of Lochinvar, with three gold boars’ heads on a blue shield and motto ’Dread God’. The reverse with a small spray of flowers and leaves in famille rose enamels.

William Gordon,  6th Viscount Kenmure (a title created in 1633) took a leading role in the Jacobite rising of 1715 and was executed on Tower Hill the following year, losing all his family titles and privileges.

His second son John Gordon ‘by courtesy’ 8th Viscount, died in 1769 leaving two surviving sons – for one of whom this service was made.  John Gordon, born in 1750 (later restored to his forfeited title as 10th Viscount in 1824) married in 1791 Sarah Anne Morgan. His younger brother Capt. Adam Gordon, born 1764, married Harriet Davies in 1789 at Oostende, Flanders. On balance it seems more likely that this service was made for Adam and Harriet Gordon.
