Plate, Qianlong c.1795, with the arms of Hamilton impaling Boyd

Deep plate with a late 18th century refined neo-classical border style in blue enamel and gold, decoration which would be taken forward into the first decade of the new century, as would its deep ogee profile.

These arms of Hamilton quartering Arran were borne by the Earls (now Dukes) of Abercorn and by the descendants of Sir William Hamilton (d. 1737) of Chilston Park, Kent, younger brother of the 6th Earl of Abercorn. The marriage with a Miss Boyd has not yet been traced.
